Power was restored on Christmas day to all but about 2,000 of the 21,000 customers who had lost power the night before, according to PG&E.

Forecasters say post frontal rain showers with a slight chance for thunderstorms will continue today. Rain showers are expected to linger into Tuesday before gradually decreasing from north to south.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning today for Northern California coastal areas, including the Bay Area.  A flood watch is in effect for the Bay Area and Central Coast through Friday morning. The weather service forecast for San Jose features rain for at least the next two weeks.

Unsettled weather is expected to continue as a series of storms aim at the California Coast. The next more significant storm may impact the region in the middle of next week.

In coastal areas, wind gusts will be as high as 40 mph and on Friday could be as high as 35 mph. 

Gov. Gavin Newsom said $600 United Way checks are on their way to flood-affected farmworkers regardless of their immigration status — but he did not commit state funds to either undocumented workers or cannabis businesses, both of which don’t qualify for federal emergency aid.

The atmospheric river will be most severe on Friday, with a flood watch already in effect today through Sunday, a wind advisory today and tomorrow for the entire Bay Area and Gov. Gavin Newsom declaring a state of emergency for Santa Clara and 20 other counties.

Wind gusts are expected to reach 40 to 50 mph, with blowing snow and reduced visibility in the higher elevations.

The new evacuation centers will match unhoused residents with access to facilities and new supplies to accelerate their move from the streets into interim housing.

Three reporting stations in the greater Bay Area saw records: Oakland (18.33 inches); San Francisco International Airport (15.28 inches); and Stockton (10.79 inches).

Page Mill Road will be closed from 8am-5pm today and Friday, while crews repair a sinkhole along a stretch of the road between Paseo del Roble Drive near Moon Lane and Arastradero Road in Los Altos Hills. State Route 92 was closed early this morning in both directions along a 4-mile stretch between Skyline Boulevard and west to Pilarcitos Creek Road.

The Almaden Reservoir, Uvas Reservoir and Coyote Lake in Santa Clara County are all above 100 percent of capacity, according to Santa Clara Valley Water. The Lexington Reservoir and Chesbro Reservoir are also above 75 percent.

Experts are predicting that by next summer or fall, El Niño will probably be in place, which could bode well for California and the West’s water outlook for several years.

Another weather system is projected to bring additional rain and periods of stronger winds this weekend and next week.

The National Weather Service issued a Flood Watch for the Bay Area for this Wednesday and Thursday. Last weekend’s atmospheric river brought 1.74 inches of rain to San José. “A potent Pineapple Express will move into the region Wednesday and continue into Thursday,” the Weather Service reported.

As of Wednesday, eight of California’s 12 major state-managed reservoirs were at less than 60% of historical capacity.
