The New York Times spotlights San Jose police salary negotiations as a measure of the high cost of living in the Bay Area.

As the 2022 election season enters its final quarter, the San Francisco 49ers – whose money boosted prior campaigns in both San Jose this spring and Santa Clara in 2020 – may be staying on the sidelines.

Today’s Homekey awards include $51.6 million for 204 interim units in San Jose and $26.6 million for 108 interim units in Palo Alto.

The Legislature has until Aug. 31 to approve the proposals, and the three most controversial bills have been shelved.

With time running out, state lawmakers likely will have to choose between alienating a powerful union and streamlining affordable housing development, as construction trades are at an impasse regarding their support for key housing legislation. 

The plan is a local version of a statewide bill proposed by Sen. Dave Cortese that failed to win legislative approval. Senate Bill 1341 would have financially supported homeless teenagers in their last five months of high school.  

Select students at San Jose State University, San Francisco State University and the University of California, Berkeley, as well as all students at Santa Rosa Junior College will have access to the new BayPass transit program.

The pilot will later expand to include residents of at least three housing developments run by MidPen Housing, transit officials said.

During Sam Liccardo's City Hall reign, the SJPD went from 1,370 officers to 1151 authorized police positions and today can only field 961 street-ready officers, and hundreds more officers are planning on leaving over the next 24-months.

The 49ers offered to pay $3.3 million to the city’s general fund, plus $650,000 to the Santa Clara Stadium Authority, which could spare the authority an additional $8.35 million in legal fees in a protracted dispute.

County Supervisor Cindy Chavez–-financially backed by the police union in her mayoral campaign–repeated the union's warnings of doom through robocalls, text messages and social media.  All of this would be very alarming, of course, if it were true. It's not true.

While the San Jose Police Officers Association claims response times are growing and predicted a “mass exodus” of officers because of pay and working conditions, the city counters that the department has the lowest vacancy rate in a decade, and its officers’ salaries are among the highest in the Bay Area.

State legislators last week killed dozens of bills, including some controversial proposals on health care costs, social media regulation, pay transparency, climate change and much, more more.

The strike begins Monday at Kaiser facilities in Fresno, Sacramento, San Francisco and in San Jose at Kaiser’s San Jose Medical Center on Hospital Parkway. The Kaiser facility at the Santa Clara Medical Office Building on Lawrence Expressway also is one of the strike targets.
