FBI agents executed search warrants targeting former Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell over the weekend and seized his electronic devices as part of a criminal probe into allegations of sexual misconduct by the former lawmaker, according to multiple national media outlets.

The British newspaper The Daily Mail broke the story this afternoon, closely followed and independently confirmed by CBS, CNN and USA Today.

One of the warrants was executed Saturday night after Swalwell landed at San Francisco International Airport, the media reported. Agents also seized the former congressman’s cell phone. The second targeted his residence in Washington, D.C., and was executed on Sunday.

News of the warrants comes months after Swalwell ended his gubernatorial bid and resigned from Congress in April over allegations of sexual assault and other misconduct from several women.

Swalwell, who represented Bay Area districts from 2013 until his resignation, faced accusations from multiple women, including rape and unsolicited explicit messages and nude photos, prompting the bipartisan House Ethics Committee to launch an investigation. The Ethics Committee only has jurisdiction over current members and staff.

California state Sen. Aisha Wahab will serve out the rest of Swalwell’s term after securing victory Thursday in a special election against Bay Area Rapid Transit Director Melissa Hernandez and will represent the state’s 14th Congressional District hrough Swalwell’s term ending in January. Wahab, a former Hayward City Council member, will be the first Afghan American to serve in Congress.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department opened criminal investigations into Swalwell in the wake of the reporting. The raids this weekend are part of a federal investigation connected to the claims of sexual assault, sources told CNN.

Three women who have spoken publicly about sexual misconduct allegations against Swalwell also told CNN they spoke with the FBI.

At the time, Swalwell acknowledged making "mistakes in judgment," but said an assault allegation was false and vowed to fight it.

On Monday, Washington-based reporters revealed that the White House had released 97 pages of declassified documents on the FBI's investigation into Swalwell about an alleged relationship with a suspected Chinese spy more than a decade ago.
