Dave Cortese made a long-expected announcement Wednesday that he will run for mayor of San Jose in 2014. The District 3 county supervisor, who made an unsuccessful run in 2006 while serving as a San Jose councilmember, plans to file papers with the Registrar of Voters on Wednesday afternoon.
“San Jose deserves a mayor who has a strong vision for the future of our great city while focusing on the issues that affect our residents every day—keeping our community safe, creating jobs, addressing homelessness, repairing streets, and supporting our wonderful libraries and community centers,” Cortese said in a statement. “I am running for Mayor to put my unique experience to work and bring our proud city back together after recent years of infighting at City Hall.”
According to his press release, Cortese has already received the endorsements of U.S. Rep. Mike Honda, Sheriff Laurie Smith, assemblymembers Paul Fong, Mark Stone and Bob Wieckowski, county supervisors Ken Yeager and Cindy Chavez, and San Jose councilmembers Don Rocha, Kansen Chu and Ash Kalra.
Dave Cortese’s District 3 seat represents the east foothills, Evergreen, Berryessa, North San Jose and Alviso. As a San Jose councilmember, he represented District 8, which is a seat currently held by Rose Herrera.
Cortese’s father, Dom, is a former state assemblyman, and the family has roots that go back to San Jose’s orchard days. Dave Cortese graduated from Bellarmine Prep before receiving degrees from UC Davis and Lincoln Law School. He and his wife, Pattie, have four children.
Cortese joins what is shaping up to be a crowded field: San Jose councilmembers Pete Constant, Sam Liccardo, Pierluigi Oliverio and Madison Nguyen have already announced their intent to run. Cortese will have a significant advantage when it comes to fundraising, however, as he is the only candidate expected to receive support of San Jose and county labor unions.
Easy choice folks. More of the same fighting with your police and fire who are fleeing the city, setting history as biggest exodus of police in Nation. So pick Liccardo, Nguyen, Constant, Oliverio (does he even have a chance?) or Try a new approach:
Hopefully Mr. Cortese can negotiate with the police officers and even MLB. And it would be nice to have someone who has been caught lying in the last 6 months.

The city has officially rejected the POA counter offer of getting back 6% of the pay that was permanently lost after the cops voluntarily gave it up….They are flush with savings and continue to waste dollars at a record pace… I wonder when the amphitheatre at st james will be finished? Maybe Swenson, Devcon and or Bothman will get pretty contracts awarded to them in return for all their support of Reeds illegal measure.
Don’t forget that Cortese, as recently as last year, was trying to attach himself to Chuck Reed’s hip…
