On the eighth day of ballot counting, Arenas cemented her victory, roaring to a more than 9,000-vote lead over former council member Johnny Khamis, with just 11,000 votes remaining to be counted.

The Tuesday evening results in Senate District 10 showed Wahab with 80,234 votes (51.7%) and Mei with 74,818 votes (48.3%).

After eight days of counting, Jonsen led by 1.44 percentage points. That’s less than half the margin Jonsen had on Election Day, when 49% of votes had been counted. 

Matt Mahan today widened his lead over Cindy Chavez with an estimated 90% of mayoral ballots counted. In order to win, Chavez would need to get more than 60% of the remaining ballots. Her vote totals haven’t come close to that percentage in the eight days of counting since Election Day.

Bob Jonsen leads the sheriff's race and incumbent Mayor Lisa Gillmor hangs on in Santa Clara, while the contest between two Democrats for California's District 10 Senate seat flipped, as Aisha Wahab pulled ahead of initial front runner Lily Mei.

Chavez would have to increase her winning percentage of the approximately 57,000 uncounted ballots to 55%, in order to wipe out Mahan's lead.

Starting today, as many as 48,000 University of California academic workers — including teaching assistants, postdoctoral scholars and graduate student researchers — are set to strike at all 10 UC campuses, a move that could cause some classes, grading and lab work to grind to a halt just weeks ahead of final exams.

The Sunday ballot count in the San Jose mayoral election showed Mahan with 103,241 votes,  or 50.89%. Chavez had 98,610 votes, or 49.11%.

The list of Election Day front runners in Santa Clara County remained unchanged after Friday's count.

The pace of the ballot counting is testing the patience of candidates and their supporters in several tight races, including the mayoral contests in Santa Clara and San Jose and the elections for District 1 supervisor and county sheriff.

Polls showed the big-bucks battle between progressive Chavez and moderate Mahan was likely going to be close.

San Jose, a million-person city in which a fifth of its residents choose the mayor, has a history of close elections. Only three of the past seven open elections could be called lopsided victories. The last time an open seat was decided in one round was 40 years ago, in 1982—the year 39-year-old Matt Mahan was born.

As of Nov. 9 with 51% of the ballots counted in the Board of Supervisors’ only contested seat, Arenas held a 3,488-vote lead over Khamis.

With 100% of 103 precincts reporting partial results, with 49% of the votes remaining to be counted, Jonsen, a former Los Angeles County sheriff’s captain, held a 7,761-vote margin over the retired sheriff’s officer.

All local incumbent Democratic members of Congress are easily headed to re-election, despite encountering significant changes in district boundaries because of reapportionment based on the 2020 census.

First returns before 9pm showed Newsom with 62%, and Dahle trailed with 38%, in early, unofficial returns
