Kalra Pleads Guilty to DUI, Avoids Jail

Councilmember Ash Kalra wont serve any jail time after pleading guilty today to misdemeanor DUI, but he will take part in a jail work-detail program for five days, pay $2,000 in fines, receive alcohol counseling for 90 days and be put on probation for three years.

Kalra was reportedly stopped in his gold Prius at 1:20am on May 7 after drinking beers with friends while watching a San Jose Sharks playoff game. A California Highway Patrol officer stopped Kalra’s car near in the intersection of Market and East San Fernando because of a broken brake light. A breathalyzer showed Kalra had a blood alcohol level of .12, which is above the state’s legal limit of .08.

Before police disclosed the arrest, Kalra held a press conference a day later at his home and acknowledged he made a “terrible mistake.”
