After 30 years with the Campbell Union School District, Superintendent Shelly Viramontez has announced her retirement, effective June 30.
The district’ trustees voted May 14 to name Campbell’s Chief Improvement Officer Whitney Holton interim superintendent when the district searches for a replacement.
“Superintendent Viramontez has been our superintendent for the last 10 years,” said Board President Will Slade. “Her consistent leadership has been a major contributor to the success of the district.”
Viramontez started her teaching career as a substitute teacher. She is a former associate superintendent of human resources.
“I have really enjoyed each position I have held,” said Viramontez in a statement. “Each of my roles has brought enjoyment, learning experiences, and personal growth. I have truly been blessed in my professional endeavors and it has been an absolute joy working with such talented and student-centered people and getting to be a part of our district for the last 30 years.”
Viramontez first joined the district as a kindergarten student at Cherry Lane Elementary School (now Campbell School of Innovation), then attended Hamilton Elementary.
Holton also has a long history with the Campbell district. She was a bilingual resource teacher before transitioning to school site and district leadership positions.
“I am thankful to the Board for trusting me with this exciting opportunity,” said Holton. “This district is incredibly special to me and to be able to continue the important work that is being done here is truly an honor.”
Whitney Holton is “a proven leader, but her history with the district will allow for stability and continued growth,” Slade said.
