Last week there was a very interesting report on spending in the last mayoral election.  In it, consultants to the San Jose Elections Commission reported that independent spending in the election totaled over $3 million. Of the six groups that were mentioned, five were associated with the Democratic Party and organized labor (including the police and fire unions). The fifth, and perhaps most controversial and effective, was the Chamber of Commerce’s PAC that leveled some particularly pointed shots at the Cindy Chavez candidacy.  By far the largest spender was the Santa Clara County Democratic Campaign, who spent over $1.7 million, ostensibly in support of Chavez’s failed campaign.

Food for Thought

When I look at the map showing the more than 1,000 wildfires burning in California right now, it seems the whole state is going up in a firestorm. I have spoken to firemen who have told me that, in fact, given the ultra-dry conditions, the stretched-out fire departments, and meteorological circumstances, a huge catastrophic firestorm is possible in large wooded and suburban city areas. It would be devastating to both humans and wildlife (the Big Sur fires already threaten endangered condors). So why are fireworks sales and traditional Fourth of July fireworks celebrations going ahead here in Santa Clara County and around the state as if none of this is happening?

The new Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) array of interstellar listening devices located near Mt. Lassen should have caught humankind’s attention and imagination. With the special radio telescopes coming online, the Mountain View-based private nonprofit organization is greatly improving its ability to detect evidence of life elsewhere in the universe. SETI’s efforts and the work at the Lick Observatory in discovering planets outside our solar system make Santa Clara County the center of our planet’s search for alien life forms and worlds that can sustain them.

On May 12, 2008, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office dropped the charges against the last of the “Eastside Six”—a group that faced numerous misdemeanors and felonies from an incident on Cinco de Mayo, 2006. But don’t let the romantic lefty throwback name fool you; these were not a bunch of armed Black Panthers planning a City Hall takeover, but, rather, peaceful community activists who were only armed with cameras and bullhorns.

This past week, I was saddened to read about the tragic deaths of two competitive bicyclists in the horrible accident involving a deputy from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department. The young deputy’s life will never be the same, as he will have to live with the consequences and, probably worse, his own memories of this tragedy.

For some people the Christmas and New Year holidays were a little too happy; 792 arrests were made in Santa Clara County for DUI during the seasonal crackdown from December 14 until January 1, up from 716 last year. There were 165 arrests in San Jose and one death in the county related to drunk driving, down from four last year. That may seem like a lot of arrests, but I wonder how many drunk drivers didn’t get caught?

According to a very good and informative article by Vrinda Normand in the Metro last week, San Jose is the only city in Santa Clara County that allows developers to contract directly with consultants to write environmental impact reports for their proposed projects. The problem with this policy was made evident recently in the Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) for the Coyote Valley Specific Plan.

Will Manage Child Labor Production

A notorious rebel group controlling several diamond mines in the gem-rich region of Sierra Leone has made a unique decision to hire former Santa Clara County school chief Colleen Wilcox to run the adolescent stone production unit of the diamond mines.

You may have missed it, but recently the police forces of San Jose and other cities in Santa Clara County merged with the Sheriff’s Department to form one large and coordinated police unit. This new Metro-County Police Force will allow a level of service unequalled in local or even California history. It will be responsible to a 13-member board consisting of both elected officials and appointed citizens with a law enforcement background.

The latest report from the U.S. Census Bureau places San Jose at the top of the list of the nation’s richest cities with a population greater than 500,000 with our median income of $73,804. Santa Clara County was second (to Marin County) in the nation in its category, showing a median income of $80,838. (Since there are a lot of gazillionaires in the city and county it means that in order to achieve the median, there must be a hell of a lot of people living on much less than the winning figures.) The average rise in income over the past year was around $1,300.

Furious Over Stunt To Steal Daughter’s Headlines

The Hilton family has filed a lawsuit with the Santa Clara County Superior Court alleging that ex-Mayor Gonzales and former aide Joe Guerra have used unfair tactics in order to wrest headlines away from their daughter, infamous socialite Paris Hilton.

What do our bloggers think of this development?

I have been following the allegations against the De Anza baseball team closely, and in light of Santa Clara County District Attorney Dolores Carr dropping the charges, I think that there are a lot of bad people getting off easy because of some technicalities.  I know it’s the law, but I find it unsettling that the members of the team that were involved will just walk away from this no worse for wear.

Close to the hearts of every government watcher from Tom Paine to Howard Jarvis is the inability of government to treat our money as if it were their money. Santa Clara County contracts with the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), which invests county contributions and makes pension payments to retirees. To be fully funded, CalPERS needs a rate of return of 7.75 percent. When they do not get that, the county—we, the taxpayers—are responsible; and there, my friends, is the rub.

New Laborcratic Entity Delivers Fatwa: Buy All Elections

After raising several million dollars to cover independent expenditures for the Chavez for Mayor campaign, the Santa Clara County Democratic Party and the South Bay Labor Council have decided to unite, forming a venture capital leviathan known as the Laborcratic Superfund.

If the above title sounds like one of Juan Miro’s paintings, you get my drift. Surrealism became tangible in San Jose this week with multiple manifestations. At least the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors came to their senses and stopped the concert hall project for the fairgrounds. I guess they finally realized that Kevin Costner’s “if you build it, they will come” rationale to spend himself into bankruptcy in the movie wasn’t a good idea in (sur)real life. The intentions may have been good, but the pie-in-the-sky entertainment-center vision and financial plan were fatally flawed. The unfortunate results, had the concert venue gone ahead per the county’s plans, would have made the problems at the Rep Theater seem like a piece of cake by comparison.
