Santa Clara Valley Water District Candidate Calls for Change

When I tell people that I’m running for Director of District 2 of the Santa Clara Valley Water District, the two reactions I get are “Huh?” and “Didn’t we just have an election?” The first is the more common. The water district is a countywide agency responsible for wholesale water supply, flood control and watershed stewardship. It has a budget of over $360 million a year, and voters don’t know that they have any say over how it’s run.

Closing Reed-Hillview Airport Will Not Solve County Deficit

Faced with a $220 million deficit, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is on the hunt for easy revenue to buoy the sinking ship. Consequently, Supervisor Pete McHugh is targeting east San Jose’s Reid-Hillview Airport for destruction so the 179 acres it occupies can be developed. (He uses the area around Elmwood Correctional Facility as a model for his proposal.) The problem is that the airport is home to 600 small planes and several aviation businesses, and the county has received millions of dollars in grants from the federal government (the FAA) to keep it open for another 20 years.

County Supervisors Should Leave Restaurant Legislation to Congress

Why is the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors getting mixed up in setting standards for national fast food chain restaurants to display calorie counts and nutritional data of their products? Supervisor Liz Kniss has proposed such legislation applicable only to restaurants with more than 15 outlets in the county. Her stated reasoning is that she wishes to fight the epidemic of obesity in the country, but I don’t see how this no-more-than-cosmetic move will do any such thing. For one thing, it leaves out the vast majority of restaurants in the county. The only result I can see is the high cost to the county’s taxpayers of policing something which has little value to the public.

The recent news about the resignation of Santa Clara Country Superintendent of Schools Colleen Wilcox can be looked at in two ways, depending on your perspective. First, it is alarming that a school superintendent who is supposed to have our children’s best interests at heart was almost dismissed because of ruthless and manipulative tactics. How is it that someone like Wilcox achieves the high post as a leader for our principals and teachers and put in charge of an office that is supposed to educate young children? Is it any surprise that our school system finds itself cast in such a negative light after news charting the school boss’s behavior like she was the villain Miranda Priestly from The Devil Wears Prada hits the front page? It is a sad state of affairs when those that we place in charge of our kids’ future turn out to have qualities that we despise.

California moved to the front of local government efforts to fight global warming Wednesday when Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation calling for a radical reduction of greenhouse gasses by dissolving the Santa Clara County government.
