News In Review: Follow The Trail

The trail of the contract, that the Mercury News so helpfully lays out.

Picking up on a point that several people have made in our comments over the last few days, Barry Witt describes the role that city staff played in the garbage contract. Anyone wanting tips on how to get out of town fast could do worse than to check out the Grand Prix this weekend.

There's other stuff going on this week of course. Here's a sampling:

The Willow Glen Farmers' Market is relocating due to construction, writes Mayra Flores De Marcotte. Irene Kew desribes the Village Harvest program that picks fruit from area homeowners' trees to give to the hungry.

And of course, DeCinzo has his own take on the Grand Prix coming downtown right on the heels of the garbage scandal.

  1. “DeCinzo is great and should be the Mercury News editorial page cartoonist.  Thanks for bringing him to us weekly. “

WHY WOULD HE WANT TO BE ON THE MERCURY NEWS’ EDITORIAL PAGES??? HE IS JUST FINE GRACING THE PAGES OF SILICON VALLEY COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS.
    —Not the Merc

  2. SJ Grunt is correct. The Merc missed the boat on this. They also got the story confused. They need to be looking VERY closely at the Manager and his staff. They need to be asking why information is routinely withheld from the Council and we need to be asking why the Council is too dense to know they are being kept in the dark.

  3. I think the real news of the week happened here at SJI:
We saw a political consultant smacked down big time for trying to defend lying politicians, and a former Mayor elevate San Jose politicians to God-like status!
All in all it’s been a pretty good read and, IMHO, the best stuff has been in the comments section.

  4. See my comment number 31 in “Follow the Garbage”.

The Mercury News didn’t pick up on the role of the City Manager’s Office in all of this.  Most noticeably Deputy City Manager Terry Roberts’ past involvement in garbage controversies.

  5. Mal Content,

I hope you don’t read history the way you interpret this board, I’d hate to hear you pop-off about how the Germans won WWII.

    Novice,

You are so right.  Because if Joe T had been his political consultant he would never have been Mayor.

Good call.  By the way, this is a lot of fun—and my blood pressure is down.

  6. Well Rich, here’s a history lesson for you:
25 smackdowns vs. 5 posts (2 by the same guy) in support your spin justifying Gonzo’s Garbagegate lies. If this was a bar fight you’d need an ambulance. grin
Just Popping Off…and glad to know your blood pressure is down.

  7. Depends on whether you count quantity or quality.

There are more Muslims than Christians—I guess that debate is over too.

P.S.  Read it again, I did not “justify” the lies—just the policy.

  8. Smackdowns is right.

As I hear it, after the successive beatings this week, Rich checked himself in and has just remerged from the Intensive Care Unit at ACLU General.

  9. Mal Content,

You need to be able to read content with more than on syllable words.

No if I were justifying the “policy” of lying—I’d be a diehard Bush supporter.  Nobody does it better.

Just for the record, you get better treatment at an ACLU Hospital than a VA Hospital.  So much for supporting the troops, heh, Novice?

  10. Rich-
Let’s just say that your posts speak for themselves, as do the volume of responses. I think we’ve established that SJI readers are intelligent enough to sort out the facts from the spin in Gonzo’s Garbagegate.

  11. 1 thing I learned this week is how weak and utterly void of facts the blue meanies (weenies?) arguments are – kind of like an online version of a Michael Moore movie.

You guys are in for a long ride.
