Demanding better pay and a more flexible work-from-home policy, state workers in SEIU Local 1000 voted to authorize a one-day walkout on Oct. 21 as the union negotiates with Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Senate Democratic leader Mike McGuire objects to the governor's plan, saying the Senate will not support convening a special session this fall.

One bill will require social media companies to share advertising revenue with news publishers.
