Mineta / SJC Named Airport of the Year

Traffic may be down considerably at Mineta San Jose International Airport, but that hasn’t affected its quality of service. The $1.3 billion renovation and modernization project has earned Mineta the title of Airport of the Year for 2008.

The Air Line Pilots Association International, which designates the Airport of the Year, cited Mineta’s commitment “to ensure safe operations in the airspace beyond the airport boundaries,” and its willingness to involve pilots not only in meetings about safety and operations, but also in long-term planning projects, including the construction of the new Terminal B.

Airport director Bill Sherry explained that “the active engagement of airline pilots has been especially valuable to help us plan and protect our investment for the future.”

  1. Well, here’s a bit of good news to break up a dreary summer. Good for SJC! The new terminal looks nice and will be even better once the new ticketing lobby and security area open next year. I’ll miss the observation deck at Terminal C, however.

  2. OK, so the new terminal looks nice and the airline pilots are impressed.

BUT IT’S STILL A DOWNTOWN AIRPORT IN AN AWEFUL LOCATION!

So let’s rejoice in the new Terminal B but begin immediately studying a NEW SJC outside of the current downtown/Mineta location.  Moffet Field or Gilroy/Hollister (via high-speed rail line) by 2030!

  3. Only a fool, or an incompetent, or corrupt, politician, would equate an airport’s aesthetics with its purpose, usefulness, and benefit to society.

Put a stake through this airport’s heart, and move it to Hollister.

  4. #5,
    Whatchoo talkin’ ‘bout Willis?
Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I’ll bet you get that all the time.
But anyway, YES! I second your motion. Take his name off the airport. I don’t care what you call it as long as it’s not Diridon, McEnery, Gonzalez, or Hammer.
    Somebody who’s dead, preferably.
