Gov. Gavin Newsom had called for accountability on mental health and homelessness when he proposed his CARE Court program. What became law, however, pleased almost no one.
Newsom’s office expects to deploy the team within the next month to San Jose and California’s other nine largest cities, to tackle encampments on state property along highway medians and under overpasses.
Across the state, some of the most vulnerable include the unhoused, whose numbers have increased by at least 22,500 in the last three years to about 172,000.
The City Council voted Tuesday to build 400 more emergency interim housing units, buy Arena Hotel with state funds and finance 561 new affordable housing units.
