A Southern California man and woman are accused of using a trending international online scam called “Pig Butchering” to try to steal more than $500,000 from an elderly San Jose man.

The county appeared to have been caught by surprise when informed three weeks ago of the DA's dumpster discoveries, releasing a statement Friday that didn't deny the allegations and affirming its commitment "to prevent future occurrences."
