Governor to Santa Clara County: Not So Fast on COVID-19

The new increases in cases, hospitalizations and deaths in California ended a downward trend across the state and jolted public officials.

There’s no guarantee that they will by next school year, but officials released new guidance in preparation for putting kids back in classrooms.

That reopening framework will be a departure from the sector-specific plan that’s been used over the last few months.

As of today, the county of 1.9 millions residents has reported 3,984 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 155 deaths.

No more cash. No more happy hours. Or large-group meals. No more break rooms, or conference rooms. No more handshakes. Or hugs.

The county still encourages social distancing and will require re-opened businesses to follow certain safety protocols.

Customers venturing out to reopened businesses should be prepared to make their own safety assessments, health officials say.

Thirty-eight employees of Lusamerica Foods have tested positive for the illness, county officials announced this morning.

The revised mandate also lets manufacturing, warehousing and logistical operations that support such businesses to get back to work.

Santa Clara County health officials are looking to increase testing capacity to 1,300 a day. But they’ve hit a road block getting there.

The mandate allows construction, real estate deals and some outdoor businesses to resume as long as they comply with safety protocols.

As part of its sweeping public health order, Santa Clara county has made recreational cannabis dispensaries illegal again.

Despite living in San Francisco’s shadow, South Bay health officials were always one step ahead of the City by the Bay.

Forty-two more people have also tested positive for the highly contagious virus, placing the total number of confirmed cases at 1,484.

County Supervisor Mike Wasserman emphasized that the order is about “protecting the people who protect us.”

No new deaths were reported, so the local death toll remains at 39. Meanwhile, the county reports that nearly 11,000 people have been tested.
