Campbell School Board Candidate Invites Outrage for Controversial Views on Guns, Welfare, Islam

Campbell Union High School District trustee Matthew Dean got called out earlier this year for his glib denial of systemic racism and suggestion that students who experience racial harassment need to toughen up and find the “diamond” in situations like being called the N-word. Though he ignored public pleas to resign, he at least agreed to not seek re-election this fall.

A broad coalition of folks applauded his decision, including teachers frustrated by Dean’s divisiveness, students insulted by his condescension and colleagues—CUHSD trustee and San Jose District 9 City Council candidate Kalen Gallagher among them—embarrassed by his verbal antics. Their relief was short-lived.

It quickly became clear that Robert Varich—a Moreland School District trustee and one of four candidates running for three spots on the five-member board—fits the same ideological mold as Dean.

Varich, who’s running against incumbents Stacey Brown and Kristiina Arrasmith as well as newcomer Basil Saleh, has said at political forums that he supports arming teachers in the classrooms and has promoted extremist rhetoric online.

A sample of tweets from his now-private Twitter account and Facebook page include one that promotes conspiracy theories about Barack Obama, another that compares government welfare recipients to wild animals and yet another that calls CNN less trusted than “breast milk from Bruce Jenner” and “having a drink from Bill Cosby.”

Varich has also shared content from The Religion of Peace, a website that features anti-Muslim propaganda and sources people such as neo-Nazi Richard Spencer and other white nationalists listed on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s hate-watch list.

“It’s really disturbing,” says Saleh, a 22-year-old Egyptian-American and Branham High alum who’s running to bring diversity to the all-white school board. “These aren’t the kinds of ideas we want to hear from the people leading our district.”

  1. > the Southern Poverty Law Center’s hate-watch list.

    Shame on The Fly.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has been described as “The ‘anti-hate group’ that is a hate group”.

It is a fund-raising con created by sleazy, creepy junk mail king Morris Dees.

It has $300 million in the bank that isn’t being used to fight poverty in the South or anyway else. The only poverty being fought is in the SPLC executive suite.

“The ‘anti-hate group’ that is a hate group’

“The real purpose of (the hate list) is to silence opponents, to isolate them. It is a kind of weaponized political correctness. It is also about raising money for the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has more than $300 million dollars in the bank and rakes in more than $50 million every year.

The SPLC and its allies are getting away with this scare tactic in part because they hide behind the perception that they are a human rights organization that champions fairness and American values.”

    • Out of all that, you cling onto a trivial bit referring to the SFLC? Are you saying that Richard Spencer is not a hate mongering radicalized white nationalist?

      • > Out of all that, you cling onto a trivial bit referring to the SFLC?

        Dear Mr. Eyes:

Do you work for the SPLC?

Should you have been named in the lawsuit brought by the Quilliam Foundation?

It’s not to late for you to kick in some money for the settlement.

The SPLC is worth $300 million so a decent settlement that would get their attention and convince them to stop their bad behavior would be $200 or $250 million. That would still leave them with $50 million or so for their slanderous, defamatory mischief.

Your fair share of the judgement should probably be $20 million or so, but I’m assuming you’re just a minor groupie. If you’re really Morris Dees posting anonymously, PAY UP!

  2. Here’s what the Southern Poverty Law Center does with some of the cash in it’s huge stash:

SOUTHERN POVERTY LAW CENTER SETTLES LAWSUIT AFTER FALSELY LABELING ‘EXTREMIST’ ORGANIZATION

“The Southern Poverty Law Center apologized and agreed Monday to a settlement of $3.375 million to Maajid Nawaz’s Quilliam Foundation after admitting to falsely labeling his advocacy organization as “extremist.”

Maybe the SPLC is just a sneaky scheme to collect money from “liberal” donors and redistribute it to “right wing” plaintiffs.

  3. I guess the point of this article is lost on some people, or they simply can’t defend Mr. Varich and so they attack the SPLC. Their inability (or refusal) to address Mr. Varich and his statements speaks volumes about them.

  4. > so they attack the SPLC.

    ROSIE:

The SPLC is a shameful, disgusting, vicious, and greedy group of thugs who have been bullying and blackmailing people for years.

Progressive NPC’s have been been mindlessly reciting the SPLC’s audio clips forever. It’s time for people to take their red pill and get out of the matrix.

Judgement day is coming for Morris the scummy thug and all the NPC’s plugged into his money sucking social media boiler room.

“60 groups consider suing Southern Poverty Law Center after it pays $3.4 M in defamation settlement”
    . . .
“Staver noted that the settlement was particularly significant because SPLC surrendered to a demand letter rather than forcing the case to be litigated.”

For all the progressives out there who want to be a part of history, I urge you to IMMEDIATELY make LARGE contributions to the SPLC so that the 60 groups about to sue the SPLC will have the largest possible settlement fund from which to receive payouts.

    “Opinions
The Southern Poverty Law Center has lost all credibility”

(Note: except for SJI and the Fly. SPLC still has credibility with the Fly.)

    “By Marc A. Thiessen

After years of smearing good people with false charges of bigotry, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has finally been held to account. A former Islamic radical named Maajid Nawaz sued the center for including him in its bogus “Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists,” and this week the SPLC agreed to pay him a $3.375 million settlement and issued a public apology.

The SPLC is a once-storied organization that did important work filing civil rights lawsuits against the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s. But it has become a caricature of itself, labeling virtually anyone who does not fall in line with its left-wing ideology an “extremist” or “hate group.”

  6. I worked with Robert Varich for over 6 years on the Moreland School Board. I never heard or saw ANY activity that supports the article above in regards to Varich. He has the experience of taking a struggling school district (Moreland 2004) and helped make it one of the best Districts in the County today. A highly diverse District with diverse needs. Varich was a thought leader on good governance of a school district and fully understands what the job is about. It’s not a place for political activism. It’s a role of steady governance and oversight of the Superintendant and District goals. Being a team player is also a strength of Varich.

    Hon. James W Macfarlane
    Member Moreland School Board (Ret.)

    • Jim, it’s time for him to get out of the business. He’s obviously given in to his “racist, fascist uncle at Thanksgiving” proclivities. Who would want to work with him now anyway? The three other candidates are qualified, hard working and evidently more ‘team player’ than Varich. Remind me when you were on the board, Jim? And where are you a judge now?

      • 2004-2010, I only used the Hon. in such a case to let people know I was indeed an elected official of my community and was part of a great board of trustees that brought the turn around of Moreland. We navigated the great recession without losing teachers, hired a great superintendent, later gave double digit raises to teachers, brought Anderson school out of PI with the State, successfully handled a Charter school to ensure success for both the District and the Charter, improved facilities, and reduced waste and abuse of education funds. First ever to get a successful parcel tax passed for the District. Just to name a few accomplishments. Ran un- opposed my second term. The people of Moreland by far are more than happy with what transpired while Robert and I were there. But if I or Robert (or any Moreland Board Member) is going to be called a racist or fascist this discussion is over.

        • Those are great accomplishments that I don’t want to disparage or downplay. Unfortunately the man has now gotten onto public forums and let us know what he actually thinks about many topics. The sorts of thoughts you don’t say in polite or intelligent company. Whoops.

    • As a former school board member, one would think you would have the logic skills to realize that what you (a single individual) may have heard or saw is not the universal experience with regards to another person…

Unless you are some sort of omniscient, God-like figure, in which case you should reveal yourself to the world…

People who say and do bad things do not typically say and do bad things 100% of the time.

      • I have no special powers, except that I do know all the members of the Board very well, spent many many hours with them, and know that they are all good people and are only there for the kids. It really is a thankless job, and it is the kids that make it worth all the time and effort. Peace out.

    • > Another evangelical Trump fan?

      JOHN:

The Washington Post is an evangelical Trump fan?

Take all sharp objects out of your pockets, put on your straight jacket, and turn yourself in to the nearest mental asylum.

IMMEDIATELY! FOR THE SAFETY OF THE PUBLIC!

  7. It’s interesting seeing the people here who presume to be self-appointed arbiters of what others may or may not say.

They’re the same people who always profess to support the 1st Amendment. The’re a classic example of cognitive dissonance — attempting to hold two mutually contradictory thoughts in their minds at the same time.

But in reality, they just cross their fingers behind their backs and say they believe in the Constitution. But they don’t; not really.

They’re just hypocrites who want to rule other folks’ lives, and they’re frustrated because they can’t do it. They can’t even win an election like Macfarlane (who I don’t know) has. So they have no credibility.

Most of all, they’re cowards who can’t even explain what they mean by “the N-word.” What’s it mean, anyway? Care to explain?

Stay tuned for a lame ad hominem rejoinder in …3 …2 …1 …

    • > But in reality, they just cross their fingers behind their backs and say they believe in the Constitution. But they don’t; not really.

      Mr. SMOKEY:

You may be a bit behind the times.

There may have been a day when “progressives” would make positive mouth noises about the Constitution, but I think those days are gone.

In this day and age, the “Constitution” is just one-side declaration of “negative liberties” penned by white male slave owning patriarchs who just wanted women to be married to manly men and pregnant all the time.

Now, the Constitution is nothing more than interference with gun-control and a legal loophole that licenses talk-radio hate speech.

The “minorities” that are protected by the Bill of Rights are just property owning rich people.

REAL protections for “minorities” comes only from “democracy” where “people” who have had their “consciousness raised” will reliably vote for “social justice” for those whom the majority thinks deserving of “social justice”.

If you think that everybody is “FOR” the Constitution, I suggest that you listen more closely to what “progressives” REALLY say. They really have nothing good to say about the Constitution.

  8. The pettiness of it all! God forbid someone screw-up and say something offensive. Why is Basil Saleh described as an Egyptian-American who wants to bring diversity to an all-white school board? Why not a bright young individual who wants to bring new ideas to improve education. Why is color/nationality brought into this? I find the term “all-white” offensive. I would ask if our young are really being prepared for the real world?
