Rose Herrera Remains in Hospital Day before Election

UPDATE: Mary Anne Groen, Rose Herrera's chief of staff, told San Jose Inside that as of 5pm Monday the councilmember was still in the hospital but in good condition. Groen said Herrera was on the phone doing campaign work from her hospital bed and expects to attend Tuesday's council meeting.

San Jose Councilmember Rose Herrera, a candidate in the mayor's race, is currently in the hospital—just a day before Tuesday's primary. She spent Sunday night in the hospital after suffering dizziness at a candidate forum earlier that day.

"It appears it’s a virus that was caused by a bad ear infection, resulting in vertigo and dizziness," Tab Berg, Herrera's political consultant, told San Jose Inside.

The 60-year-old councilmember was rushed to the hospital by paramedics after she felt dizziness while standing up at the mayoral forum. Berg, who has been in touch with Herrera's husband, said that she expects to be released today.

"The one comment I got from her was the debate was going great, 'I was kicking ass, until I collapsed,'" Berg said.

Herrera's hospitalization was first reported by the Mercury News.

Whether she can go back to work Monday or Tuesday is unknown. In addition final campaign pushes, the City Council will also convene Tuesday to vote on a variety of matters, including medical marijuana regulations.

That meeting could keep Herrera and fellow councilmembers/mayoral candidates occupied as election results are tallied. The polls close at 8pm and updated results should be available starting at 10pm and every 45 minutes after that. The mayor's race features Herrera and council colleagues Sam Liccardo, Madison Nguyen and Pierluigi Oliverio, we well as Santa Clara County Supervisor Dave Cortese.

No one is expected to take more than 50 percent of the vote, so the top-two finishers will likely face each other in November runoff.

  1. I was at the forum yesterday. I am so glad to hear that Rose is better. She and her husband are in my thoughts and prayers. Get well soon Rose!

  2. Only government functionaries with great health insurance paid for by taxpayers get”rushed to the hospital” because they “felt dizziness”. Rose is dizzy allright!

  3. She has been in a constant state of “Dizzy” for the last 2 Terms . Funny how they complain about city workers pay and benefits , but fail to tell the public that the Mayor and Council members recieve a Pension and Med/Den after two terms. While all other city workers have to do 20-30 yrs for that benefit. Also they are untouched by Measure B

  4. Dizzy, thinking what the heck have I been doing on this city council and why I am running for Chuck’s job. I must be sick in the head.
