Fly finds it ironic that many of the local leaders who supported last week’s City Council vote to denounce Arizona’s harsh new illegal-immigration law themselves do business in the Copper State—whether they are aware of it or not.

It turns out that Madison Nguyen, who sponsored the resolution, hosts her re-election website http://www.madisonnguyen.com with the Phoenix-based iPower Inc.

There is also a long list of local officials and candidates who host their personal websites through the Scottsdale, Arizona-based GoDaddy—among them are Mayor Chuck Reed (MayorReed2010.com) and Councilman Ash Kalra (AshKalra.com), both of whom backed the resolution.

As domain registration costs only $10 per year, divestment would have a merely symbolic effect. However, the city itself has several multimillion-dollar contracts with Arizona companies for goods and services from garbage collection to stun guns.

The Fly is the valley’s longest running political column, written by Metro Silicon Valley staff, to provide a behind-the-scenes look at local politics. Fly accepts anonymous tips.

  1. Madison Nguyen, Chuck Reed and Ash Kalra need to be informed that the city is broke, because obviously they didn’t get the memo. Why else are they wasting time on bitching about what another state does instead of focusing on fixing San Jose?

  2. I hope that people are paying close attention to those running for re-election in Nov. namely Madison. There is a lot of hypocrisy about when it comes to saying, “ Do as I say, not as I do.”

To boycott, or denounce a City who is experiencing everything from kidnappings, drug dealings, murders, and massive illegal immigration is irresponsible. It is in this City’s best interest to force the Federal Government to start doing its job, and to start working with law enforcement to enforce it’s own laws.

On a side note: It is frustrating to hear all this complaining, only to see the same problem being voted right back into office! Could one of you bloggers PLEASE tell me why you keep voting in the same irresponsible people, or parties over and over again if you hate the status quo? Or why you don’t bother to vote at all? Only 15% of registered voters voted in this election. That is shameful and disgusting, especially given that you can vote from home!

  3. Don’t blame me, Kathleen. In this most recent election, I voted for people other than the incumbents, just to send a message. But I don’t live in Madison’s district, so I have no input regarding her. I’m beginning to wish that recall had been successful, though.

  4. Mr. Mayor and Councilmembers:

Stick to your job—running SJ and closing the budget deficit.  If you personally have a problem with SB1070, fine, express it.  Don’t waste valuable public time tilting at windmills.

This is after the Suns were protesting the new law in AZ:

Much has been said against AZ’s move to do the Federal
Government’s job. The following was sent by a friend and pokes fun at the
Suns. To see were it came from first, see the last line.

“What if the owners of the Suns discovered that hordes of people
were sneaking into games without paying? What if they had a good idea who
the gate-crashers are, but the ushers and security personnel were not
allowed to ask these folks to produce their ticket stubs, thus non-paying
attendees couldn’t be ejected. Furthermore, what if Suns’ ownership was
expected to provide those who sneaked in with complimentary eats and
drink? And what if, on those days when a gate-crasher became ill or
injured, the Suns had to provide free medical care and shelter?”

  5. The Big Labor, purchased free and clear, members of the “San Jose Silly Council” pooled their collective genius and climbed aboard the P.C. bandwagon—what a shock. The next thing you know they will boycott Colorado River water(just the part that touches Arizona, I mean, these people aren’t stupid ) and cancel their Chas. Schwab accounts(serviced in Arz.) Yeah, we do get the “leadership” we deserve.

You probably answered your own question:

“. . . you can vote from home”

Or, at any rate, someone claiming to be you can claim that they voted from your home.

And, as Uncle Joe Stalin said, “elections are not decided by who votes, but who counts the votes.”

And, in the case of San Jose, the votes are counted by members of the public employees unions who would presumably like to see the candidates supporting the biggest employee benefits packages win elections.

But, there I go again, being cynical and conspiratorial.

  7. Fly finds it ironic but I find it disgraceful.  Madison Nguyen is joke.  Not because of the Little Saigon incident but because she obviously introduced the AZ boycott as an attempt to grab at the large Latino vote in her district—she is in fact fighting for her political future.

What a doofus that she proposes the boycott and then hosts her own website from a AZ based company.  Maybe we’ll all get lucky and out of her convictions she’ll close up her website!

  8. Pander-monium has broken out at CH.

    Q.  The most dangerous place to be in San Jose?
    A.  Between a councilman and an open microphone when the chance to “si se puede!” to 2 or more latinos/lgbt’ers/union-istas arises.
