Health Officials Warn of Measles Exposure in Santa Clara County

A tourist with measles visited 20 restaurants, stores and destination in several South Bay cities last week, prompting public health officials to issue a warning: unvaccinated people who crossed paths with the traveler may get sick.

The international tourist stopped by places in Cupertino, San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto and Mountain View from March 16 to last Saturday before being hospitalized for the disease, according to the Santa Clara County Public Health Department. Citing patient privacy laws, the county declined to release any identifying details about the person.

“The good news is that most people living in Santa Clara County have been vaccinated and are protected from measles,” Dr. Sara Cody, who heads of the county health department, said in a news release. “However, if you or a family member are not immune to measles and you think you were exposed to measles, watch closely for fever, cough, red eyes, runny nose and a rash that starts on the face. Call your doctor right away if you develop any of these symptoms.”

Symptoms take about one to three weeks from exposure to develop, she noted. Unvaccinated children, including infants too young to receive the vaccine, have the highest risk of contracting the virus.
