No Evidence Found to Back up Campos’ Rigged Election Claim

Nora Campos has a history of losing her temper—and staff and money, as a result—but now the assemblymember for San Jose's East Side has a new accomplishment: wrongly accusing fellow Democrats of perpetrating a rigged election.

Last month, Campos claimed that "a fraud" had occurred in the delegate election for her Assembly District 27. In a letter to Chris Myers, managing director of the California Democratic Party, she said the "very integrity of the process" had been "compromised" by less than thorough background checks of voters' addresses and registration. She did not mention that only one person from her slate was elected to the 14-member delegation that will give a party endorsement in 2016 to an AD27 candidate. With that comes financial backing and institutional support.

On Thursday, the state Democratic Party's compliance review commission (CRC) said in a unanimous ruling that it found "no evidence that election was improperly conducted."

In addition to citing rules and procedures for such an election, the CRC said Campos "failed to provide any specific challenges" and "failed to exhaust all remedies at the time of the meeting." She will have 12 days from the date of the decision to appeal.

There have been rumblings that Campos' dispute of the result was motivated by the upcoming election. While she terms out of the seat at the end of 2016, there have been rumblings that her little brother, one-term former San Jose Councilman Xavier Campos, is considering a run AD 27. After losing his re-election race to Magdalena Carrasco, an inability to control the AD 27 delegation's decisions would only continue the rapid decline in power of the Campos clan.

It's not known if Assemblymember Campos intends to appeal the decision. A call to her office was directed to the voicemail of chief of staff Sailaja Rajappan. Office spokesman Steve Harmon apparently left the office late last month.

UPDATE: Steve Harmon sent out a tweet over the weekend that shows Nora Campos' office has not slowed down in its turnover of staff.

      QUESTION 2

WERE THE REGISTRATIONS OF VOTERS CHECKED BEFORE SHOWING UP TO VOTE?
      SEEMS STANDARD PROCEDURE

      QUESTION 3

SJI SEEMS TO HAVE ALL THE DATA ABOUT THE ELECTION AT THAT MEETING.
