City Hosts Another Mayoral Forum this Weekend

Voters in San Jose will get another chance to hear from mayoral candidates this weekend at a city-sponsored forum.

Councilman and erstwhile mayoral candidate Pete Constant will sponsor the event through his district. The event takes place at 10am Saturday at Bethel Church, 1201 S. Winchester Blvd., in San Jose.

The point of the forum is to give people a chance to pose questions to the candidates to help make up their minds about who to vote for, Constant says in a memo submitted to the Rules and Open Government Committee. Anyone is invited to attend and participate.

Other upcoming forums include:

Community Arts and Lecture Program, 6:30pm April 3, San Jose City College.

League of Women Voters San Jose/Santa Clara, 6:30pm April 4 at Southside Community Center.

District 8 Community Round Table: Evergreen Mayor’s Forum, 6:30pm April 9, Evergreen Community Center.

Vietnamese American Roundtable candidate forum, 11am April 13, Evergreen Valley College.

More from the San Jose Rules and Open Government Committee agenda for March 26, 2014:

She goes on about the impending merger between Comcast and Time Warner, calling it “a marriage made in hell,” and wonders when San Jose will get “Google Internet.”

Pete’s email says his mayors forum starts at 10:00, not 10:30.

You take your life in your hands on DT SJ sidewalks. Virtually no-one uses the double-wide Liccardo Lanes to ride their bikes. Auto traffic, on the other hand, has been much worse since the Liccardo Lanes were installed in late 2012, especially during commute hours. And the signal timing wasn’t changed, either, so on S. Third during the morning commute you stop at almost all the lights from William to Santa Clara, since three lanes of traffic have been squeezed into two by the Liccardo Lanes. Add to that the double parked big rigs unloading behind Safeway at Third an San Fernando, as well as garbage trucks on Third during the morning commute, and some days there is only one lane for auto traffic during the commute hours. Way 2 go Sam and the council! The Bay Area Bicycle Coalition did a study a while back that concluded that while 10% of trips in Palo Alto are by bicycle (think Stanford students), only 2% are by bike in SJ. SJ will NEVER eqaul Palo Alto in bike ridership, but Bike Boy Sam has inconvenienced 98% of travelers to champion bike lanes that nobody uses. I wonder if Sam rides his bike to campaign events? The small blue round Botts Dots kinda signs on the sidewalks asking folks to walk their bikes are unreadable as the bicyclists and skateboarders speed along on the DT sidewalks. SJPD didn’t ticket those folks when times were good and we had 1300+ cops in SJ. Good luck getting them to do that now.

Note to Sam and Rick Doyle: by making the entire auto lane on St. John and other DT streets as bike lanes, you have created a dangerous condition on public property. A few folks on bikes ride in the full lane now, at 10mph max., in a 25mph zone. It’s only a matter of time until one of these folks is injured or killed by a motorist. Then Rick will have to hire outside litigation counsel to handle the defense. Settlements could cost the taxpayers millions of $$. Better blot out the stenciled signs on the roadway and remove the pole signs along St. John and every other street where this dangerous condition has been created BEFORE someone is injured or killed.

  3. I went to the Mayoral Forum at Bethel Church . It is simply amazing that these Candidates ( specifically the council members , except PLO) Continue to blame the POA for the mass exodus of Officers. Sam & Madison claim that they will hire 200 more Police Officers . BUT fail to tell voters that hiring candidates is the easy part , retaining them is proving almost impossible. Hererra says create a window of opportunity for Police Officers that left for better Pay and Benefits at other jurisdictions , can return to San Jose out of the kindness of their hearts .also to hire back retiree’s . All 4 candidates are insanely delusional . PLO’s Idea is to contract with the Sherrifs and CHP , Not gonna happen but its more realistic than Sam’s or Madisons Ideas. Hererra’s idea is just moronic . No body who has left San Jose will return for any reason . Cortese’s idea is to sit down and fix the Major flaws in measure B . Then people will return and be retained . This option is the best idea , but it will also require the most work and I don’t believe any of the council members will stand up and admit Measure B needs fixing.
Pension reform is a must , no doubt about it , But it must be done through diligent and honest negotiations. Not like in the past. In order for San Jose to heal , negotiations have to take place. hell do it out in the open , in front of the Public.

    • Why isn’t the Mercury News sending a reporter to any of these forums? The only token coverage of the mayoral race has been Mr. Herhold who brings all the biases of a columnist. How do San Jose voters get the information needed to make an intelligent decision? At this point readers of the Mercury News should be classified as low information voters.
