Today was the deadline to file the first round of campaign finance forms for San Jose City Council and mayoral campaigns. Not all were uploaded online by the 5pm deadline, but here’s a look at the four mayoral candidates whose reports were available.
Madison Nguyen raised $167,153 from 268 donors. She spent $69,111.84, mostly on printing, signs and communication services. Some $1,000-plus donors included: Applied Innovation, lobbyist Jerry Strangis, D-Tek Manufacturing, CAA Tri-Valley California Apartment Association, Yellow Checker Ca, the San Jose Giants and Veritas Information Processing from Las Vegas. She also received $500 from Bay Area Citizens PAC from Emeryville.
Rose Herrera raised $50,000 ($31,150 from 39 separate monetary donations, the rest money she loaned to her campaign). She spent just $376 through Dec. 31 on printing costs. Some of her $1,000-plus contributors included: McCarthy Ranch, Peninsular Builders and Development, Ivycorp, CRW Development, Arcadia Management, Arcadia Homes and Arcadia Development.
Pierluigi Oliverio, who swore off fundraising until after the holidays, loaned himself $10,000. He spent $3,626 on what appear to be two newspaper ad buys: $2,106 to CA Newspaper and $1,470 to Times Media.
Sam Liccardo raised $513,000 from 1,002 individual donors, half of them from San Jose. He has $485,093 cash on hand.
Forms for Dave Cortese were unavailable as of 5pm.
Council candidates
District 1
State Assemblyman Paul Fong raised $28,865 from 122 donors. He spent $5,332 on a kickoff party, office supplies and professional services.
Charles Jones raised $31,265, with $20,000 of that amount coming from a personal loan. He spent only $744.08.
Susan Marsland raked in $14,507 from 29 smal contributions last year and spent $1,321 on a logo design and a meet-and-greet.
Richard McCoy raised $1,405 and spent $780.
Forms for Tim Gildersleeve and Robert Levy were unavailable.
District 3
Mauricio Mejia raised $1,115 from six donors and managed to spend $7,500 on consulting and design services.
Kathy Sutherland raised $22,280 from 98 donors in the filing period. She spent $2,737 on her campaign kickoff, office supplies and a website.
Forms for Don Gagliardi, Raul Peralez, John Hosmon and George Kleidon were unavailable..
District 5
Xavier Campos, who’s running for re-election, raised $8,950 from a personal loan and 14 individual donors, including a $500 each from big sister Assembleymember Nora Campos and his mom, Rosa. He reported no expenses. He also hired a professional firm to handle his forms this time around.
Magdalena Carrasco reported $7,050 in cash contributions from 20 donors, including Rocketship and ex-husband and state Sen. Kevin DeLeon. She spent $1,772 on voter research and office expenses.
Forms for Brad Hayden and Aaron Resendez were unavailable.
District 7
Maya Esparza reportedly raised $6,241, with $3,500 coming from a loan she gave her campaign. The rest came from 21 individual donors. She spent $864 on professional services and office supplies.
Forms for John Arce, Claudia Avila-Martin, Van Le, Johnny Lee, Jose Lujano, Tam Nguyen and Thai Buu were unavailable.
District 9
Don Rocha, who’s running unopposed, raised $14,472 from 48 donors. He spent $1,593 on miscellaneous office, post office and PayPal expenses.
