County Considers Offering Fairgrounds for San Jose Softball Complex

While San Jose considers where to build a bond measure-funded softball complex, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors will discuss a plan to bring it rent-free to the fairgrounds.

The $10 million to build the fields comes from a $228 million bond measure San Jose voters passed 14 years ago. City officials studied several locations and decided long ago that the best site is a swath of land by the Eastridge Mall owned by Arcadia/Evergreen Circle Development Company.

But at a November City Council meeting, San Jose leaders voted to delay a decision until they heard more about the county-owned fairground site. The fairgrounds could fit more fields, but would delay construction even longer.

More from the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors agenda for January 14, 2014:

• A work-study contract between the county and San Jose State University is up for renewal. The program gives low-income students a job opportunities to support themselves through school.

• The California Peace Officers Association, which represents correctional officers in the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department, agreed to a 2-percent general wage increase.

• An audit suggested that the probation department should transfer its laundry workload to the Department of Corrections—that’s 827,000 pounds a year of laundry, 44 percent more than the DOC cleans and folds now. That could be a problem because consolidating laundry services between juvenile-probation and adult jails could give people a chance to exchange contraband.

• A financial safety net meant to prevent Section 8 tenants from getting evicted after the federal sequester cut funding for public housing may get extended through May. Since September, the program has prevented 18 tenants and their families from getting evicted, a county memo states. More than 16,500 families in the county rely on housing support.
